Introduction: The Photography Issue

You’re looking at the first annual NRMD photography issue. Rather than focus on a particular topic in retina, this issue will focus on particular people in retina: the people who make retina tick, who blazed their own trails, and whose careers are to be emulated.

Kevin Caldwell, photographer extraordinaire, whose lens is pointed toward the podium (and the cocktail lounge) at nearly every retina conference, provided the portraits herein. Mentees, colleagues, and friends of those profiled shared personal stories about the doctors in this issue. These vignettes show that, although the legendary careers of these subjects cast them as larger-than-life figures, the doctors who sat for these photo shoots retain the humility required to ground their careers in humanity. Indeed, without the exceptional moral fabric woven into the souls of these doctors, their professional accomplishments would be hollow. Luckily for us, that fabric is strong, and serves it as scaffolding to amplify their professional accolades.

Don’t blink. Smile. Turn your head just this way a little bit…Perfect. Enjoy the issue.
