1. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIAN OR MUSICAL GROUP?
Thomas A. Ciulla, MD: This has varied over the years, but the two groups that stand out are the Rolling Stones and the Eagles. My favorite pieces played in our home (by my daughter) are Pachelbel’s Canon in D, Chopin’s Nocturne, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Nancy Holekamp, MD: Hamilton, the Broadway musical—I am addicted! Lin-Manuel Miranda is a modern-day genius.
Glenn J. Jaffe, MD: I like many genres and artists. In the OR, I frequently listen to alternative rock—for example, older groups such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers, Audioslave, and Linkin Park, and newer artists such as Bon Iver and Beach Slang.
2. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED VACATION SPOT?
Thomas A. Ciulla, MD: Sanibel Island, Fla., has been a favorite retreat for our family, with its natural wildlife refuge, bike paths, and beaches.
Nancy Holekamp, MD: An African safari is the best, most memorable vacation you will ever take. I have been three times!
Glenn J. Jaffe, MD: It has evolved with our kids’ ages—beach vacations when they were young, and more active vacations (eg, skiing and hiking in the Rockies) as they became older. Our favorite recent family vacations have included Vietnam and Iceland.
3. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER?
Thomas A. Ciulla, MD: Take more time to learn lifelong, socially oriented sports such as tennis and golf. I still struggle with these, but losing track of time over a game of tennis or golf with family and friends is precious.
Nancy Holekamp, MD: Enjoy your patients; enjoy getting to know them; enjoy caring for them. It’s what makes practicing medicine a unique human experience.
Glenn J. Jaffe, MD: There is no single thing. I had great mentors who prepared me well for my chosen career as an academic vitreoretinal specialist.
